Researchers have unearthed a forest in northern China preserved under a layer of ash deposited 300 million years ago.

Preservation of the forest, just west of the Inner Mongolian district of Wuda, has been likened to that of the Italian city of Pompeii.

The researchers were able to "reconstruct" nearly 1,000 sq m of the forest's trees and plant distributions.

Just about the time people get the feeling we have found everything, something like this comes along.

What a great find - I wonder what other animal fossils will be found?

This is actually before dinosaurs (which were about 65 million years ago), so it is way before Australopithecus. Mammals were very small rodent like creatures at the time of the dinosaurs.

There are some really great photos of plant fossils!

It would be interesting if tools were found.

Yes I accepted it, thank you.

As a hobby I have been lucky enough to be the first hands to touch uncovered dinosaur bones. I have found beautiful petrified pieces, this would be shivers beyond imagine.
